Dan Phillips’ Chicago Edge Ensemble – Decaying Orbit

Although guitarist Dan Phillips has lived in Thailand for close to 20 years, he spent years living in New York City (playing with luminaries Ben Street and Jim Black) but more formative, living in Chicago, IL. From the mid-90s to the early 2000s he lived in Chicago where he led groups featuring local talents Jeff Parker, Chad Taylor, Tim Daisy, Krzysztof Pabian, Rudresh Mahanthapa, Phil Gratteau and Larry Kohut. The city’s characteristic hard swing, aggressive yet melodic music made an impression on him and he’s back with a record featuring the best of Chicago free jazz – MARS WILLIAMS (saxophone), JEB BISHOP (trombone), HAMID DRAKE (drums), & KRZYSZTOF PABIAN (bass) – A group convened to capture the spirit and sound of Chicago. Through a thriving set of original music, they do more than that– they add their own peculiar mark on that tradition. ~Stephen Buono Publicity
